Volunteers from Commsworld took time out of their day job in IT to support Lorraine to decorate her home in Edinburgh.

Lorraine, supported by Right There had been trying to decorate her living room for years but due to health conditions couldn’t do the work herself. Through our charity partnership with Commsworld, four volunteers, took on the task of creating Lorraine’s dream space.

Having seen room in the same condition every day for six years Lorraine says she felt elated once she saw the final reveal. “They did a perfect job, and I can’t fault any of it. It looks brilliant”.

Steve Wood who is the Sales Director at Commsworld (turned painter/decorator) told us “Seeing the result and happiness on Lorraine’s face, made all the team’s efforts and the fun we had doing it worthwhile’’.

Decorating her living room is just one way in which Lorraine has received support from Right There. Lorraine is supported by our  In the Community, YourHome programme in Edinburgh, which supports around 1000 people each year. Our team provide one-to-one support in the community to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Offering help with all aspects of life which might affect how hard it is for someone to maintain a home.

When Lorraine arrived at YourHome, her support worker helped her to navigate the complicated benefits system, secured her a new appliances her house and got her involved with YourHome’s Craft Group, where members of the community come together to socialise and learn new skills.

“Being part of Right There has given me more belief in myself, all my life I’ve been told that I would never come to anything and that I’m no good at anything and now I’m building my confidence and meeting other people.”

With no family in Edinburgh, Right There have been a support for Lorraine She now has ambitions of giving back and volunteering so that she can be there for other people going through tough times.

“If I could help that one person, it would be amazing, because I have been through it.”
