Scottish Parliament Garden Lobby Hosts Milestone Celebration
On November 20, 2024, the Scottish Parliament’s Garden Lobby witnessed a remarkable event celebrating 200 Years of Preventing Homelessness. The gathering, hosted by Right There and sponsored by Pam Duncan-Glancy MSP, marked not only the bicentenary of the charity but also a legacy of profound societal impact.
With over 100 attendees representing third and public sector organizations, the event underscored a dual message: a celebration of achievements and a renewed call to address the persistent challenge of homelessness.
A History of Compassion and Resilience
Right There began its journey in 1824, established by evangelist David Nasmith in Glasgow as a lifeline for young men during a time of rising inequalities. Over the decades, it evolved into the YMCA Glasgow, later Ypeople, and now Right There—a reflection of its expanded mission. Today, it provides tailored support to almost 4,000 individuals annually, assisting those affected by poverty, homelessness, addiction, trauma, and other adversities.
From Glasgow to the Orkney Isles, Right There’s work spans the breadth of Scotland, rooted in local communities that face growing inequalities.
The evening’s program reflected the charity’s impact and aspirations:
- Pam Duncan-Glancy MSP’s Opening Address: She emphasized the importance of Right There’s work and its alignment with broader social priorities in Scotland.
- Janet Haugh, CEO: Highlighted the charity’s “people-first” approach, its evolution, and its ongoing commitment to breaking the cycle of homelessness through early intervention and holistic support.
- Renzo Cardosi, Director of Development and Programmes: Explained the scope of Right There’s programmes—For People, At Home, and In the Community—and their profound economic and social impact, saving over £300 million annually for the public purse.
- Lived Experience: A powerful testimony from Wullie McCool brought the work of Right There to life, illustrating its tangible difference in real-world outcomes.
Complementing these speeches, videos showcased the charity’s journey and the values driving its mission.
The bicentenary event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose. Right There remains committed to its vision: ensuring every individual has a safe place to call home. By addressing homelessness through prevention and holistic support, the charity not only honours its 200-year legacy but also sets a blueprint for the future.
As the evening’s networking unfolded, one sentiment resonated among attendees—while much has been achieved, the journey to ending homelessness continues.
